Urbanized

From the maker of Helvetica and Objectified, Gary Hustwit, comes Urbanized.

The third documentary in this trilogy following Helvetica and Objectified is about the design of cities. Urbanized looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design, featuring some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers. Over half the world’s population now lives in an urban area, and 75% will call a city home by 2050

Cow Clicker

I’m ascertain most people won’t get the ingeniousity of this

Cow Clicker is a Facebook game about Facebook games. It’s partly a satire, and partly a playable theory of today’s social games, and partly an earnest example of that genre.
You get a cow. You can click on it. In six hours, you can click it again. Clicking earns you clicks. You can buy custom “premium” cows through micropayments (the Cow Clicker currency is called “mooney”), and you can buy your way out of the time delay by spending it. You can publish feed stories about clicking your cow, and you can click friends’ cow clicks in their feed stories. Cow Clicker is Facebook games distilled to their essence.

Exposed: The Last Roll Of Kodachrome

The film, known for its rich saturation and archival durability of its slides, was discontinued last year to the dismay of photographers worldwide. But Kodak gave the last roll ever produced to McCurry. He has just processed that coveted roll at Dwayne’s Photo Service in Parsons, Kan. — the last remaining location that processes the once-popular slide film.

Signal strength bars are meaningless

Wonderful piece on relationship between signal to noire ratio and signal bars. Hint, there hardly correlation and the bars are a nice useless visual clue.

So, the phone has this number in its head which represents the SNR and that number is constantly fluctuating up and down as the airwaves around you teem with random signals, reflections, and other interference. This isn’t a particularly nice thing to show end users, so the phone does two things. Firstly, it takes that ever-changing number and does a moving average on it to smooth out those rapid spikes. Then, it applies some sort of magic formula to approximate that complicated number into a 1-to-5 scale, which it then puts on the screen as bars. The magic formula is basically made up by the design engineers as they see fit, and it can vary from phone to phone and even between software releases on the same phone. If someone is kicking it old school and getting five bars at your house with their Motorola RAZR and you’re getting three on your Nokia 8210, that doesn’t mean their phone is better than yours. It might just mean that Motorola’s designers made their bars work differently, or it might not.

Polar & Nike+

iPhone Photo of the Day: Moka Express

Kahvinkeittimestäni rikkoutui vedenkeitin joten jouduin hankkimaan hätäratkaisun kunnes saan hankittua oikean. Kahvipannun hyvä puoli verrattuna keittimeen on mahdollisuus ottaa se viereen terassille ja lukea uutisia kahvin kera auringossa.

On Safari 5′s reader mode

Employing tricks like needless pagination, auto-refreshing see Salon.com, misleading headlines, and the like is cheating. You didn’t earn those pageviews, you tricked people into giving them to you. And then you look at shit like popups, popunders, double underlined links, Snap previews, Tynt scripts, and so on, and it’s pretty clear how hostile it all is. It’s nothing but money-grabbing. If you’ve got it set up so bad that your readers are employing things like ad blockers and Safari’s Reader, you fucked up. You did something wrong. — [advertising revenue] is not something you’re entitled to, it’s something you earn by cultivating a user base.
